Hole inspection system for boards

Hole Inspection System

Our task was visual inspection of boards from six sides, while simultaneously checking for the presence of holes.

We approach each project individually, the machine (HIS) is a unique global solution with the potential for implementation in other production facilities. In addition to our current Swedish client, we have another order for this type of machine for Brazil.

Traditional inspection methods often require multiple repositioning of the part or cover only selected surfaces, increasing the risk of undetected non-conformities.

Our project goal was to develop a system capable of comprehensive, six-sided inspection of a component in a single, uninterrupted production cycle.

SOLUTION

In response, we developed Hole Inspection System an advanced quality control solution utilizing industrial vision systems, dedicated lighting, and proprietary image analysis algorithms.
A key feature of the system is the ability to simultaneously inspect all six surfaces of a component without the need for part manipulation.

The system operates at a speed of up to approximately 50 m/min, while ensuring measurement accuracy of 0.1 mm - 0.2 mm, which allows for maintaining the highest quality standards even with high production efficiency.
The analysis is performed in real-time and covers, among other things:
- correctness of machining operations,
- presence and location of holes,
- geometric compliance with process requirements,
- Detection of non-conformities affecting further production stages, particularly dimensional deviations and drilling errors.

Additionally, the system occasionally identifies other obvious material damage (e.g., voids or detached fragments), which can also be classified as non-conformities. Defects related to drilling execution can also be included in the scope of inspection.

TECHNICAL ASPECTS

Project implementation required designing an architecture that allowed for the synchronization of multiple cameras and real-time processing of large amounts of data.
We paid particular attention to:
  • measurement stability at high transport speeds (up to approx. 50 m/min),
  • maintaining accuracy at 0.1 mm – 0.2 mm,
  • the system's resistance to industrial conditions, such as variable lighting, dust, or vibrations.

The developed algorithms enable automatic quality assessment based on defined process parameters, eliminating operator subjectivity and ensuring full repeatability of results.

RESULTS

The implementation of the SKO system significantly increased the effectiveness of quality control while maintaining high process efficiency.
Key benefits:
  • full control of elements from six sides in one cycle,
  • operation at speeds up to approximately 50 m/min without loss of accuracy,
  • precise inspection at a level of 0.1 mm – 0.2 mm,
  • detection of non-conformities at an early stage,
  • reduction of complaint costs and improvement of the company's image,
  • reduction of rework costs, through early response to process errors,
  • increased production stability,
  • access to real-time quality data,
  • the ability to further optimize production processes.
  • The ability to remotely check production status, as well as hourly statistics for the last day and overall statistics,
  • The ability to save measurement statuses to an external or local drive using standards such as SQL.

This project demonstrates that modern machine vision systems can take over tasks that, until recently, required multi-stage control or manual verification.

By combining advanced image analysis, industrial automation, and real-time data processing, we have created a solution that enables comprehensive quality control.
